In a bid to popularise solar energy among domestic consumers, Punjab has decided to give subsidy on solar panels, with an idea to make solar energy mandatory in the public and private buildings, especially in the houses constructed over an area of one kanal and above plots in the urban estates.
This proposal is part of the state government’s NRSE-2012 Policy, which aims at maximising and improving the share of new and renewable sources of energy. The Government view came to light during a high level meeting held here to review the untapped potential of solar energy in the state where the Punjab Governor, Shivraj V Patil emphasised that every household across the state should be encouraged to have Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) Panels on their rooftops to augment the energy generation in the state.
In response to the proposal, Parkash Singh Badal, chief minister, Punjab has given his vote of confidence to give subsidy on these panels. He informed the Governor that the state government was already giving 70 per cent subsidy on the solar tanks used for drip irrigation in the orchids.
Badal also apprised the Governor that the state government had already initiated steps to make solar energy mandatory in the public and private buildings, especially in the houses constructed over an area of one kanal and above land in the urban estates.
