Another CHIPS Act fund sanctioned! US government has granted nearly $5 billion for Samsung and $407 million for Amkor’s semiconductor projects, creating thousands of jobs and boosting is tech supply chain.
The US government has recently confirmed nearly $5 billion in funding for Samsung’s semiconductor plants in Texas and $407 million for Amkor’s advanced packaging facility in Arizona.
According to a report by EE News, these amounts reflect a 20% reduction from the original figures. However, Amkor will use the funding to support its $2 billion investment in a new packaging and testing facility in Peoria, Arizona, creating approximately 2000 manufacturing jobs and over 2000 jobs during the facility’s construction.
Meanwhile, Samsung will receive up to $4.74 billion to support its $37 billion investment in two new fabs and an R&D facility in Taylor, Texas, and expand its Austin site. With a third facility planned, these fabs could produce 2nm chips by 2026.
In the next five years, Samsung’s project will generate around 12,000 construction jobs and 3,500 manufacturing jobs.
Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo highlighted the importance of advanced packaging for the US semiconductor supply chain, with Amkor’s investment bringing world-leading technologies to support industries like AI and high-performance computing.
She also praised Samsung’s investment, noting it will bolster the US supply chain and create tens of thousands of jobs.
Since the introduction of the CHIPS Act, companies have announced 90 projects across 28 states, drawing significant private investment.
The Semiconductor Industry Association expects these projects to generate over 58,000 jobs in the semiconductor sector and more across the wider economy, though funding under the act may decline under the incoming Trump administration.
In the next five years, Samsung’s project will generate around 12,000 construction jobs and 3,500 manufacturing jobs.
