The company aims to commercialize industrial humanoid robots to address labor shortages, with plans to develop consumer models later.

Figure, the OpenAI-backed robotics company, has started shipping its innovative humanoid robot, Figure 02, to commercial clients. This advancement positions Figure alongside Agility Robotics’ Digit in the competitive humanoid robotics field. The company announced that the F.02 robots have arrived at their customer and are now connecting to the network and performing pre-checks, paving the way for automation in warehouses and factories.

Figure and BMW have announced major upgrades to the Figure 02 robot, increasing production line speed by 400 percent and success rates sevenfold. With integrated cabling in its limbs, the enhanced humanoid robot is better protected from environmental hazards and can operate longer on production lines. It features a battery capacity that is 50 percent larger than Figure 01, integrated into its torso for optimal weight distribution, resulting in enhanced agility.

With the help of this partnership, Figure 02 has achieved a remarkable 400% speed increase and a sevenfold boost in success rate. The trial run at Plant Spartanburg is yielding valuable data and insights on how to effectively integrate these robots into current production systems.

Speaking of the features of the robot, custom motors tailored for each joint maximize power and performance, while streamlined internal cable routing enhances reliability. The efficient design of shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, combined with tripled onboard AI and computation capabilities, enables seamless fully autonomous task execution.

With six RGB cameras and an advanced vision-language model, the system enhances perception, obstacle avoidance, and hand-eye coordination for improved object handling. Figure 02’s hands, featuring 16 degrees of freedom, can lift up to 55 pounds (25 kg) and mimic human dexterity. Each finger, equipped with sensors and motors, allows for realistic grasping, while the wrist design ensures precise, human-like motion.

Furthermore, Figure 02 features microphones and speakers, utilizing custom AI models developed with OpenAI. This enhances communication and interactions, making it a versatile solution for various operational challenges.
