The partnership exemplifies the synergy between academic research and industrial manufacturing, highlighting the potential for innovative solutions through such collaborations.
Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) Chennai has partnered with Vijaya Electronics to develop an advanced Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor. This collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Agreement signed on November 26, 2024. The initiative combines VIT’s research expertise with Vijaya Electronics’ manufacturing capabilities to create a motor characterized by high efficiency, low noise, and superior performance, aiming to revolutionize its intended application area.
The signing ceremony was attended by VIT’s Vice President G.V. Selvam, Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. T. Thyagarajan, and Professor Lenin N C, the motor’s inventor. This partnership underscores a significant step toward technological innovation and industry-academia synergy.
The Permanent Magnet Brushless DC Motor (PMBLDC Motor) is a synchronous motor that uses permanent magnets instead of windings on the rotor. It operates without brushes, offering several advantages over traditional brushed motors. The absence of brushes reduces friction losses, leading to higher efficiency and better thermal management. With no brushes to wear out, these motors have a longer lifespan and require less frequent maintenance. Most importantly, using permanent magnets allows for a smaller and lighter motor than traditional induction motors.
Under this collaboration, VIT Chennai will provide its research expertise in motor technology, while Vijaya Electronics will utilize its manufacturing capabilities to produce the motor. The motor is designed to offer high efficiency, low noise, and optimal performance, aiming to impact its intended application sector significantly. This partnership exemplifies the synergy between academic research and industrial manufacturing, highlighting the potential for innovative solutions through such collaborations.
