The aim is to help students with essential skills in areas such as very-large-scale integration (VLSI), semiconductor technology, analog and digital design, validation, and testing.

In an effort to grow engineering skills in India’s semiconductor ecosystem, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar has partnered with MOSart Labs to offer a professional diploma program in semiconductor technology and chip design, targeting engineering graduates. This collaboration aims to equip students with essential skills in areas such as very-large-scale integration (VLSI), semiconductor technology, analog and digital design, validation, and testing.

The collaboration was formalized by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Shreepad Karmalkar, Director of IIT Bhubaneswar, emphasized the institution’s commitment to enhancing education through industry collaborations.

The new professional diploma program in semiconductor technology and chip design at IIT Bhubaneswar is specifically tailored for engineering graduates with specializations in electronics, communication, electrical, and computer science. Additionally, it is open to professionals already active in the semiconductor industry, providing an opportunity for skill enhancement and specialization.

The newly introduced curriculum for VLSI education is divided into three structured parts aimed at equipping students with both foundational and specialized skills. The program begins with the Launchpad Module, introducing students to the integrated circuit lifecycle and the essentials of the VLSI industry. After passing a qualifying exam, students enter the Foundation Module, which spans a semester and delves into chip design and semiconductor technology. Finally, in the Specialisation Module, students select advanced courses and complete a mini-project within their chosen specialization, allowing them to gain hands-on industry experience.

In addition to the diploma program, IIT Bhubaneswar has also introduced an M.Tech. degree in Semiconductor Technology and Chip Design. This program covers design, fabrication, assembly, testing, packaging, and the development of IPs/ASICs/SoCs/Systems for targeted applications, further supporting the nation’s growth in the semiconductor sector.

These initiatives follow India’s Semiconductor Mission (ISM), which seeks to establish the country as a global hub for electronics manufacturing and design. Recent developments under ISM include the establishment of a new semiconductor fabrication facility and two Outsourced Assembly and Testing (OSAT) units, representing a total investment of INR 1.25 lakh crore. These projects are expected to generate thousands of technology jobs and foster startup opportunities, producing chips with 28 nm, 40 nm, and 90 nm transistors.
