The production of iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 cases, but authorities have also ensured that shipments will not be negatively affected.
Sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that Tata Electronics, a factory in Tamil Nadu’s Hosur that manufactures Apple iPhone components, barred its operations after the unit was ablaze. According to media reports, the unit’s management is about to initiate a forensic investigation to discover the root cause of the fire.
Management also added that the facility, well-known for producing iPhone components, has deployed fire engines in the affected areas. It is highly expected that the area will be high on fire again or that carbon smoke will appear from the sheds that fell during the incident. Reports also indicate no casualties.
A senior fire and rescue service official told the media that around 6 a.m., the fire caught up in a chemical godown on the campus, where seven firefighters were deployed to control the situation. Highlighting the safety of the workers, the factory’s executives said that a detailed investigation will be conducted into the incident and will also ensure the interests of the workers and stakeholders.
In the meantime, the company has stopped manufacturing the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 cases. Still, authorities have also ensured that shipments will not be negatively affected as the buffer stock can easily meet the market demand for the coming three months. The unit manufactures important back panels and other components for iPhones. Both Tata and Apple have called for an official meeting where they will finalize the timeline to start production of the products again.
Apart from Foxconn and Pegatron, Tata is also Apple’s contract manufacturer. Although reports indicate that shipments won’t be impacted by the incident, it is largely speculated that Apple’s suppliers will be affected, as the company is now looking at India as an imperative destination to diversify its supply chain other than China.
