JSW MG Motor India has launched a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model for its electric vehicles, enabling consumers to buy EVs at reduced initial costs while incurring operational expenses. Under this scheme, the Comet EV is now priced at Rs 4.99 lakh, positioning it as the most affordable EV in India. Customers will incur a cost of Rs 2.5 per km for the usage of the battery.
JSW MG Motor India has recently declared that all its electric vehicle models are now available for purchase under the Battery as a Service (BaaS) model. This innovative offering allows customers to acquire an electric vehicle (EV) at a considerably reduced upfront cost while incurring operational expenses. For instance, the Comet EV is now offered at a BaaS price of Rs 4.99 lakh compared to its standard ex-showroom price of Rs 6.99 lakh. This price adjustment makes the Comet the most affordable electric vehicle in India, surpassing its nearest competitor, the Tata Tiago, which is priced at Rs 8 lakh. Under this new pricing structure, customers who choose the Comet will pay a running cost of Rs 2.5 per kilometre for battery usage.
Satinder Singh Bajwa, the Chief Commercial Officer at JSW MG Motor, conveyed excitement about the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. He emphasised that this innovative approach to providing Battery-as-a-Service is expected to boost the adoption of emission-free vehicles nationwide. According to him, they have created a framework that makes owning an electric vehicle (EV) easier, thereby greatly expanding its accessibility.
Previously, the battery rental strategy was introduced with the Windsor electric SUV, which starts at Rs 10 lakh and has a running cost of Rs 3.5 per kilometre. The Comet EV boasts a range of 230 kilometres on a single charge. The company highlights that BaaS is a flexible ownership option, allowing customers the choice to purchase an MG EV outright at the ex-showroom price or through a subscription model.
Additionally, the company emphasised its commitment to making electric vehicles more accessible through various initiatives, including free charging and lifetime warranties for first-time owners, focusing on offering the best Total Cost of Ownership rather than just affordability. This approach ensures that car buyers receive superior value.
