With a 70% female workforce in its Tamil Nadu factory, Foxconn is focusing on women’s leadership in India’s technological field, disclosed Chairman Young Liu as he spoke on new ventures in the country.
Foxconn, the Taiwanese iPhone contract manufacturer, aims to have more women in India assume leadership roles in design and technology. The company employs 48,000 people in India, with 25% of recent hires being married women.
In his recent visit to India, the company’s Chairman, Young Liu, told PTI that Foxconn envisions expanding roles for women beyond assembly work to include positions in design and technology.
He noted that many current employees are highly educated and expressed a desire to offer them opportunities for advancement.
The company recently opened a women-only housing complex in Sriperumbudur near Chennai, constructed by the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT). The complex can accommodate over 18,000 Foxconn women employees.
70% of the Tamil Nadu iPhone assembly factory workers are women. Liu had mentioned earlier mentioned that Foxconn is experiencing growth in hiring across all categories in India and recruits without regard to gender.
Foxconn is setting up its second-largest mobile manufacturing plant outside China in Karnataka, with a planned investment of Rs 250 billion, expected to create 40,000 jobs. This new investment follows a recent infusion of approximately Rs 12 billion into the Karnataka facility, bringing the total investment in Foxconn Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development Pvt Ltd to about Rs 138 billion.
Additionally, the company has established a joint venture to build a semiconductor plant in India and is preparing to manufacture electric vehicles there. Last week, Liu mentioned that the company is negotiating with the Tamil Nadu government to establish a battery energy storage system unit focused on electric vehicles.
He also noted that Foxconn’s information and communication technology division has recently launched operations in India and that they are planning to introduce their “3+3 future industry” in India soon.
Under its “3+3 strategy,” Foxconn has focused on growing its business in three major sectors: electric vehicles, digital health, and robotics.
