Tata’s ₹60 billion iPhone plant in Hosur begins operations in November, promising 50,000 jobs and strengthening Apple’s manufacturing base in India.
Tata Electronics is set to launch its second iPhone manufacturing plant in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, in November 2024. The company will invest ₹60 billion. Spanning 250 acres, this new facility will become Apple’s fourth iPhone assembly plant in India and Tata’s second dedicated to Apple’s smartphones.
The plant will house around 20 assembly lines and is expected to employ 50,000 workers, predominantly women. Of these, 35,000 to 40,000 will be assembly line positions, making it the largest iPhone assembly plant in India.
This expansion is part of Apple’s broader strategy to reduce reliance on Chinese manufacturing amid ongoing geopolitical tensions between China and the US. The move aligns with Apple’s goal of relocating 10% of its global iPhone production capacity to India by the 2025-26 fiscal year. India’s iPhone market share is expected to grow significantly, with the country projected to account for 20-25% of global iPhone shipments this year, up from 12-14% last year.
Apple’s contract manufacturers in India include Tata Electronics, Pegatron, and Foxconn. The new plant underscores Apple’s commitment to scaling its operations in India, driven by the government’s production-linked incentive scheme and the rapidly growing local market.
