Wings EV Gears Up To Launch India’s First Electric Micro-Car

Robin will be offered in three distinct versions: a basic model with a 65 km range, costing ₹2 lakhs (ex-showroom); a mid-range model with a 90 km range, priced at ₹2.5 lakh; and a luxury model, also with a 90 km range, available for ₹3 lakhs.

Wings EV announced on Friday its plans to launch a new electric microcar named Robin. The company, based in Indore, aims to introduce a new category of vehicles in the Indian market by offering a two-seater electric microcar that combines the agility of a motorcycle.

Founded by a father-son team, the company plans to introduce Robin in Bengaluru by April 2025. According to Pranav Dandekar, CEO and co-founder, this initiative is expected to contribute to reduced traffic congestion, pollution-free personal transport, and minimal use of road space.

Pranav Dandekar, a Stanford University alumnus and PhD candidate in computer science, stated that Robin has cleared all safety tests conducted by ARAI Pune, positioning it as safer than any existing two- or three-wheeler.

The company aims to sell 3,000 units in its first year, leveraging its Indore plant’s capacity to produce up to 10,000 units annually, as reported by Dandekar.

The CEO also mentioned that Wings EV has secured funding from multiple sources, including Venture Highway and various prominent angel investors from both Silicon Valley and India. Having spent 17 years in Silicon Valley, Dandekar highlighted that the company conducted over 300 test drives in Bengaluru and engaged in user research across six Indian cities.

Before launching across the nation, Robin will initially be introduced in either Chennai, Hyderabad, or Pune later in 2025. Dandekar noted that they plan to start deliveries in April 2025. He explained that the initial orders would help determine the first production batch’s scale. Additionally, if there is a strong demand in the southern markets, the company might explore the possibility of establishing a manufacturing facility in that region.

Robin will be available in three variants: a basic model with a 65 km non-AC range priced at ₹2 lakhs (ex-showroom), a mid-range model with a fan and a 90 km range priced at ₹2.5 lakhs, and a luxury model featuring a 90 km range, AC, and proprietary auditory alarm systems for enhanced safety, priced at ₹3 lakhs. Dandekar also reported that the fully loaded Robin can climb a 12-degree incline, surpassing the required 7 degrees, making it suitable for most flyovers with inclines between 3 and 4 degrees.

According to Prakash Dandekar, Wings EV co-founder and CTO, India purchases over 18 million motorcycles annually. He predicts that a significant portion of two-wheeler buyers might switch to two-seater microcars over the next 15 to 20 years. The CTO, who previously led Tata Technologies’ Embedded Systems and Telematics Division, added that Robin features a drive-by-wire powertrain akin to the fly-by-wire systems used in advanced aeroplanes.
