Global PC Market Up 3.1% YoY, AI Boom Ahead

Predicting an upcoming AI PC demand surge in the year’s second half, the global PC market warms up with a 3.1% year-on-year increase in Q2 2024 as per reports.

Global PC shipments increased by 3.1% YoY in Q2 2024, reaching 62.5 million units, marking the second consecutive quarter of growth, according to a report published by Counterpoint.

The report has stated that this rise has been driven by a moderate replacement cycle and a low previous year’s base, indicating ongoing market recovery. Experts predict that with AI PC demand and a post-COVID-19 replacement cycle, PC shipments are projected to grow by approximately 3% in 2024.

Overall, brand rankings and shares remained largely steady in Q2 2024 regarding the leading market players.

Lenovo continued to lead the PC market, achieving a 23.6% market share and around 4% YoY shipment growth in Q2, despite a slowdown in demand in China.

HP and Dell showed stable performance, benefiting from order recovery in North America, with HP holding a 21% share and Dell 16%. Apple saw limited activity, capturing an 8.5% market share as it awaits the release of the new M4-based MacBook to boost shipments later in 2024.

Counterpoint highlighted that AI PCs are gaining momentum, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X laptops leading the trend. The upcoming AMD Ryzen AI 300 and Intel Lunar Lake in late Q3 2024 are expected to further boost AI PC popularity.

Windows on Arm AI devices are also driving growth. The report predicted that MediaTek and NVIDIA’s future Arm-based AI laptops will likely expand Arm PC market share, potentially surpassing 25% by 2027, at the expense of x86 models.

Senior Analyst William Li noted that H2 2024 will be crucial for AI PCs as vendors drive the growth of this new technology. He said, “Due to the higher selling price of AI PCs, we believe enterprise demand will run ahead of the mainstream consumer sector, although we may not see the most rapid adoption path in the first year of AI PCs. The deployment will accelerate as more AI use cases and solutions are developed and applied to PCs.”
