Hygenco plans to produce green ammonia at its Gopalpur facility. The first phase targets 600 TPD and aims for CoD by 2027.
Hygenco Green Energies signs a Term Sheet with Ameropa, a Swiss distributor of fertilizers and grains, to explore the potential supply of green ammonia from Hygenco’s upcoming plant in India. This partnership supports fast-tracking green ammonia projects at the Gopalpur port in Odisha, India.
Hygenco embarks on a monumental project to build a state-of-the-art green ammonia facility at the Gopalpur port, which will start production in two phases. In the first phase, the plant aims to produce 600 tonnes of green ammonia per day (TPD) and targets achieving a Commercial Operation Date (CoD) by 2027. The second phase will increase production capacity to 1,200 TPD by early 2028. By 2030, the project aims to reach its total production capacity of 1.1 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green ammonia, a significant contribution to the green energy landscape.
As part of its broader strategy, Hygenco is set to invest US$2.5 billion in green hydrogen and ammonia projects over the next three years. Notably, Hygenco stands as the sole Indian company with an operational commercial green hydrogen plant. The company is also in the process of developing multiple green hydrogen plants across India, aligning with the nation’s 2030 target of producing 5 million tonnes of green hydrogen.
Ameropa is entirely behind Hygenco’s advanced plans and shares the ambition for a global portfolio of low-carbon ammonia. The Swiss distributor is focused on establishing a reliable supply chain for exporting green ammonia to Europe and Asian markets. This initiative is in line with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. It’s worth noting that green hydrogen and ammonia are emerging as promising alternatives to fossil fuels in various sectors, including fertilizers and energy.
For Ameropa, the production of green ammonia is a crucial step in producing low-impact fertilizers and advancing sustainable agricultural practices worldwide. This collaboration with Hygenco significantly enhances Ameropa’s efforts to reduce indirect emissions and capture a significant share of the growing global low-carbon ammonia market. The partnership supports Ameropa’s sustainability goals and positions the company as a key player in the transition to low-carbon ammonia production.
