This collaboration delivers higher power at lower costs, with minimal maintenance and longer lifespans of up to 20 years, contributing to greener solutions with next-generation zinc batteries.
The world is witnessing a rapid evolution in the battery industry, driven by an essential need for sustainable energy storage solutions. The global energy storage market is on an upward trajectory, with projections of an annual growth of 21%, reaching 442 GWh by 2030.
Hindustan Zinc Ltd, India’s zinc producer, signs a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with AEsir Technologies, Inc., a US-based company specializing in zinc battery technologies. They develop next-generation zinc batteries, offering an alternative to modern energy storage solutions. These zinc-based batteries deliver higher power at lower costs, require minimal maintenance, have lifespans of up to 20 years, and contribute to a low-carbon future.
Hindustan Zinc’s initiative aligns with sustainability goals, addressing the rising demand for eco-friendly energy solutions. This significant step forward in the global energy transition sees the MoU supporting Hindustan Zinc’s exploration of zinc’s emerging applications in clean energy.
Zinc batteries revolutionize energy storage with corrosion resistance, cost-effectiveness, recyclability, stability, and environmental friendliness. They offer broader temperature tolerance and reliable backup power for 3-72 hours. Built with non-flammable materials, they are non-reactive to air and water, produce no toxic fumes, and ensure excellent safety.
Additionally, zinc-based batteries are recyclable, use non-hazardous raw materials, and have a greenhouse gas footprint six times lower than other technologies.
AESir’s Nickel Zinc (NiZn) batteries prove dependable and thrive in the high-end defence sector, including aerospace and marine, renewable energy, critical infrastructure for data centres, and 5G telecom. Decades of continuous improvement at live locations enable AEsir’s NiZn batteries to eliminate historical issues like electrolyte dry-out, metal branching (dendrite growth), and zinc migration.
Arun Misra, CEO of Hindustan Zinc Limited, emphasizes the vital role of zinc in achieving a low-carbon future. He states that Hindustan Zinc aims to produce metals to sustainably support the global energy transition. This partnership with AEsir Technologies advances efforts in emerging clean technology, creating innovative, eco-friendly solutions for a greener future by supplying high-quality zinc for advanced energy storage.
