From January to November 2023, India added about 9 GW of solar capacity and 2.7 GW of wind capacity, bringing the cumulative renewable energy capacity to 132.7 GW.

In December 2023, there were 10 new tenders for renewable energy projects announced, with a total capacity of 5,785 megawatts. The renewable energy sector in India witnessed a flurry of activities this month. Several tenders were issued and auctions completed, indicating robust growth and investment in clean energy projects.

Solar Energy Corporation of India(SECI) issued a tender for a 1500 MW ISTS-connected solar project for development across India.  National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) floated two 1500 MW tenders, one for ISTS-connected solar projects and another for ISTS-connected wind-solar hybrid projects across India. Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA) released a rooftop solar tender with a capacity of 500 MW in Uttar Pradesh. Also, solar tenders worth 785 MW were issued by various state power corporations.

Around 2,750 MW of solar energy and 1,500 MW of wind-solar hybrid project tenders were auctioned in December 2023. NTPC auctioned 1104 MW capacity under a 1500 MW Solar-Wind hybrid tender initially issued in July 2023. SECI and PFC Consulting respectively auctioned 1000 MW and 1250 MW ISTS-connected solar tender with the entire capacity allotted. GUVNL auctioned a 500 MW solar tender in Gujarat with 390 MW capacity allotted.

Several bids were submitted under the SIGHT Scheme (Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition Programme) for electrolyser manufacturing capacities and green hydrogen production facilities. Companies like Hild Electric, Ohmium Operations, John Cockerill, and others, submitted bids for electrolyser manufacturing ranging from 100 MW to 300 MW across different buckets. Bids for green hydrogen production facilities included Acme, Torrent Power, and UPL Ltd bid for capacities ranging from 2,000 MT/annum to 90,000 MT/annum.

From January to November 2023, India added about 9 GW of solar capacity and 2.7 GW of wind capacity, bringing the cumulative renewable energy capacity to 132.7 GW.  In December 2023, India generated a total of 13,707 million units (MU), a 23.5% increase compared to November 2023, with significant contributions from solar and wind energy. Major investments and deals in the renewable energy sector included funding for Adani Green Energy, Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy, and KPI Green Energy. Policy proposals and initiatives focused on green hydrogen, energy storage, and regulatory updates were key highlights.

These developments underscore India’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy infrastructure and transitioning towards sustainable and clean energy sources. The investments, policy measures, and increasing capacity additions demonstrate the country’s potential to be a leader in the global renewable energy landscape.
