The initial rollout includes 25 vehicles and three strategically located swapping stations in Colombo, with ambitions to expand the service to Galle and Kandy.
RACE Energy is making its mark internationally with a key pilot project in Colombo, Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Lanka E-Mobility Solutions (Private) Limited (LeMS). Their ‘e-wheel’ battery swapping project aims to transform Sri Lanka’s electric vehicle (EV) scene.
The plan is to quickly escalate to 500 vehicles in the next 3-6 months, offering a ‘pay-as-you-go’ model that will serve approximately 1.2 million Sri Lankan ‘Tuk’ drivers.
Arun Sreyas, Co-Founder of RACE Energy, emphasized the organization’s dedication to providing advanced, lightweight, safe, and high-energy-density swappable batteries. The move to Sri Lanka was motivated by similarities in market and environmental issues with India and the critical demand for electric alternatives due to fuel shortages in Sri Lanka.
Gautham Maheswaran, another Co-Founder of RACE Energy, highlighted the company’s success in Hyderabad’s EV sector, where it leads over half the market and manages more than 1,000 swaps each day. Earning the AIS 156 Phase-2 certification further cements RACE’s industry standing.
Shirendra Lawrence, Co-Founder and Director of LeMS, expressed excitement over bringing RACE Energy’s advanced battery-swapping technology to Sri Lanka’s extensive three-wheeler community. The conversion from traditional petrol engines to electric systems, which can be completed in just two hours, immediately makes vehicles compatible with RACE’s swapping services.
RACE Energy’s technology offers quick battery exchanges, tackling issues like high vehicle costs, lengthy charging periods, and range concerns. Having achieved 5 million green kilometres and 1,000 daily swaps in its network, RACE Energy is significantly influencing the EV landscape, paving the way for a more accessible and efficient electric mobility future in Sri Lanka and other regions.
