Pegatron India plant produces 10% of Apple’s iPhones in India, currently.
Pegatron, an electronics manufacturing company, halts production in its India branch due to a fire incident, last Sunday. The production has been halted for two consecutive days, so far, and is expected to remain the same for another day. In the worst case scenario, a week’s shutdown is expected.
The fire started from a charging rack, where phones are tested after assembly, on the first floor, a state industrial safety official said. With about 29 workers present at the site, it started around 8:00 p.m., they added.
The damages are being accessed by independent surveyors. Pegatron Corporation has observed no financial or operational impact of the incident. It is said to be a spark incident, which caused no injuries.
Pegatron India plant, located in Chengalpattu, Chennai, started production in India in September, 2023, preceded by Wistron and Foxconn. Spread across 36000 square meters, it has around 8000 workers on the assembly line. The production capacity of the plant is around 26000 iPhones per day, current production being 8000-12000 iPhones per day. It is also rumored to open a new contract facility for Apple in India.
