A participant in the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, Nokia is extending its production capacity in Chennai after registering high demand

In a response to increasing demand from local as well as international markets, telecom company Nokia announced that it will extend manufacturing of PON optical line terminals (OLTs) at its factory in Sriperimbudur near Chennai in India. The company said that the pandemic-hit world has witnessed changes in consumer behaviour, from home working to data-rich entertainment services, which is resulting in high demand for broadband.

As per Nokia, demand for fibre is also shifting to new regions with the Asia-Pacific region seeing strong demand in markets like Japan, India and Southeast Asia. This demand will be significantly seen in the form of fibre to the home (FTTH) but there is also major demand from mobile network operators as they deploy 5G and need next-generation fibre in their transport networks to carry the expected surge in data traffic, it added.

Globally, institutional support like funding from government and private equity funds is further bringing investments in broadband and fibre connectivity. Nokia is also a participant in India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The company believes that its planned production of PON OLTs in India will give a boost to expand the company’s production base and geographic reach.

“The importance and criticality of high-speed broadband has never been more pronounced as it is today,” commented Sandy Motley, President of Fixed Networks at Nokia. “As the momentum towards 5G networks and new hybrid usage models push operators towards increasingly distributed network architectures, service providers are investing in fibre to build out and upgrade their existing networks. Nokia is the leader in FTTx solutions globally and is innovating rapidly to introduce next-generation PON solutions. We are happy to add the manufacturing capacity in India to better address increasing demand in the region and worldwide.”

Noting that India is seeing massive demand for fibre connectivity from both fixed and mobile operators, SVP and Head of India Market at Nokia, Sanjay Malik remarked, “OLT production at our Chennai plant will offer a timely boost to meeting this demand in a timely way. Service providers in India will benefit from the increased availability of both existing Lightspan product lines as well as upcoming GPON access nodes which offer smaller lower-density OLTs to suit a range of conditions and requirements.”

In another update, Nokia has also announced to open LaaS test lab in Bengaluru to drive Industry 4.0 goals. Over 150 years old Nokia is a Finland-headquartered company which believes in creating technology that helps the world act together. The telecom operator partners with companies for critical networks, across mobile, fixed, and cloud networks.
