Vitesco will work to make a zero-carbon emissions inverter for the OPolestar 0 project.

German electric mobility solutions provider Vitesco Technologies has joined the Polestar 0 project to create the world’s first entirely carbon-neutral vehicle.

The company will assist the Swedish electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer to develop the power electronics to achieve a zero-carbon emissions inverter for the production vehicle application in 2030.

CEO Andreas Wolf explained Vitesco’s role in the project and said, “Vitesco Technologies with its know-how will be able to make a major contribution to this ambitious goal of moving the industry toward complete carbon neutrality.”

The German automotive supplier for drivetrain and powertrain technologies has set the goal of being carbon neutral across its entire value chain by 2040.

Project manager Mike Brighton said that the company was analysing around 10 sub-assemblies with more than 1,000 components for the Polestar 0 project. “We are examining the use of natural fibres and biologically produced plastics, as well,” he added.

Vitesco is working on several projects where cross-functional teams are developing appropriate processes, structures, methods, tools and use cases for specific products and components. The Circular Electronics project is one such example undertaken by the company, to achieve complete recyclability of electronic components.

Wolf said that the Polestar 0 project was far more than just a milestone on the road to climate neutrality, but an exciting pilot project for entirely new forms of collaboration in open networks.

Launched in 2021, Polestar’s initiative aims to eliminate all sources of carbon emissions throughout the supply chain from the extraction of raw materials to material and vehicle production, delivery and end-of-life, without relying on misleading offsetting schemes. While the switch to EVs eliminates tailpipe emissions, Polestar recognises the need to urgently address emissions that stem from production.
